Step 3. Test Labels on Items

It's important to thoroughly test to have confidence that the labels will scan successfully. The following tests will help validate how successful the technology will work for your company.

  • Test labels on items - Do the tags scan all my products and packaging? Consider an area where the tag won't rub consistently or contact other surfaces, so it's better to avoid placing the sticker on the bottom of the box to avoid friction and impact.
  • Test items grouped to scan in current density - When the items are grouped and placed in their final storage location, can I scan them all successfully? If you are having trouble scanning dense inventory, you will want to test the various "Scan Sessions" located to the left of the power slider on the scan screen. We recommend using Session 2 or 3 to see if you can scan all of your tags.
  • Test labels in various environments - Do the labels read in all places where the tags need to be scanned? Heat, cold, moisture, etc., can impact read success.
  • Test distance - How far can I be away from the items to scan them successfully? If you have trouble reading at a distance your operation needs, you will want to use a long-range label with more sensitivity.
  • Test Accuracy - How do I verify that all tags are scanning? To confirm accuracy, you will want to perform an Audit scan. The Audit scan will mark any tags in your previously Verified inventory absent and allow you to scan against the list.

DO NOT place labels on metals or liquids.

RFID cannot read through liquids or metals; this includes plastic with aluminum paint, clothing with sequins, & mylar bags.

For these hard-to-scan materials, there are a few options:

On-Metal Tags - require an on-metal printer but can be applied directly to metals and liquids

Hang-Tags - creates space between the inlay and the item to read successfully

Flag-Tags - have adhesive on the part of the sticker which allows the RF inlay to sit away from the surface of the item
