Capture raw EPC and validate encoding

This article outlines the process of scanning a tag that won't scan in Simple RFID to verify encoding

1. Get the EPC value from the tag. This is done by downloading TSL's "RFID Explorer" app from the Google Play or Apple App Store.

2. Scan with RFID Explorer

  • Open the app
  • Pair the reader

  • Turn down the power

  • Scan the tag

  • Upload the data by clicking the icon of the box with the arrow pointing up

3. Convert the HEX string to Text

Use this website to plug in the HEX value and get the Text output

If the data is "Closed Loop" it will have:
  • A two-character company abbreviation
  • Followed by a pipe |
  • Followed by a 6 character item reference
  • Followed by a pipe |
  • Followed by the serial number

If the data is GS1 SGTIN-96, you will plug the EPC into the bottom field in the GS1 Encoder / Decoder:

The data will have:

  • Company Prefix
  • Followed by a period.
  • Item Reference
  • Followed by a period.

Once the tag fulfills the Closed loop or GS1 requirements then you can use the search and find feature on the mobile app and see if the tag is recognized.
